Are their any structural engineers on here or DIY'ers that have a good amount of knowledge about how much weight a given area of floor can handle over time? Is it easy enough to get a ballpark by dimensions, details, and pictures?
I recently contacted a local structural engineer and asked how much he would charge to tell me how much weight my dining room and living room could handle. He gave me a price of $500. That may be the going price for a peace of mind, but damn, that's a lot for just a quick number (or so I think).
I offered to provide photos, dimensions, and any and all details of the home, but I understand that they have to cover their ass, especially if their calculations are wrong.
I am really trying to avoid spending $500. Most people would say, just do it, and stop being a tight ass. My mind won't let me :biggrin2:
In summary, I need to know what weight my floor can handle in a 6ft long span, x 24". I guess that's why it hurts my head to pay that amount. It's such a small floor area of concern. Approximate Max weight is what I'd be after.
Sure I could install floor jacks in the basement and call it a day, but I don't want to if I don't HAVE to.
