Our contractor appears to be covering gaps between our tub and the surrounding concrete wall with the tiles we're having installed. Is this sufficient? It seems odd that you would need waterproofing everywhere, but can have such a large gap at the bottom of the wall and just tile over it. Thank you for any advice you might be able to provide.

Thank you very much for your reply. Very helpful! It's there any risk of water damage if the back board is behind the tub lip? It's hard to tell from the picture, but the back board is about a half inch behind the tub lip.
