They probably used starter strips at the bottom to hold it firmly in place. Normal. The j channel on either end of the gable vinyl should have extended all the way down. You mentioned seeing insulation. Was the gable covered with OSB prior to the vinyl?
 
The corner of the gable is pure poor craftsmanship. They could have done much better, but they were lazy.
The peak is about as good as it gets.
Looking up, if that is the bottom of the siding, they didn't even use a starter strip, as I had indicated in the first post.

I would definitely have the owner of the company come back out, show him the problem areas and see what his solution is. Hopefully final payment has not been made.
 
MUCH better on the corners. I think they did the best they could on the bottom, but the flashing (white) makes it look much better. Those two nails ruined the entire reason for them to return. Your call, but I'd have that piece replaced. No surface nails on siding.
