Hi all-
We’re building an open gable patio cover and want it to be all sealed/stained (not painted).
This will be built in the high desert area of SoCal, so it’ll see pretty much the full spectrum of weather (temps 20’s-100’s, rain, snow, sun, etc).
The lumber is all rough sawn and the roof is T&G. I plan to stain/seal before the framing starts and touch up as needed during/afterwards.
I’ve been told to hit it all with boiled linseed oil right away when delivered to help prevent checking/cracking.
Questions for y’all:
1) do you agree with spraying/rolling linseed oil on it right away?
2) any issue adding a stain/sealant over the linseed oil?
3) can you make any recommendations on what stain/sealant to use? At the risk of catching some flak…we can procure and/or accept delivery in AZ or CA if a better product isn’t available for sale CA.
The pic attached is for reference and is one built nearby and kind of our inspiration. We aren’t set on any particular color yet of stain yet, but do like how this one looks, though we have though about going with a darker stain.
Thanks!
