We are in SW Ohio in a 1.5 story cape cod style house with the typical problem of the second story isn't being cooled by the central AC. The second story is 600 sq ft of which are two bedrooms about 250 sq ft each, and a bathroom and landing of about 100 sq ft. Basically walk up the stairs to the landing, straight ahead is the bathroom, and each bedroom is to the right or left.
I've air sealed and added insulation as best as I can, there are returns and supplies in each bedroom, and a supply in the bathroom. The one bedroom return is quite weak, it won't hold a piece of tissue to the grate when running. We currently use a 6000 btu window ac in each bedroom for added cooling. We will sometimes use a space heater in one bedroom for my son, but not in ours, so heating usually isn't a problem.
Looking around, found a Fujitsu 7k dual head mini splits with 18K outdoor unit that looks like it could take the place of the two window units. But would that be too much cooling or can it slow down without getting too inefficient?
I know we won't see an ROI on this in terms of cost vs savings, but not having to take the window units out each winter, having to deal with bugs sneaking in and hopefully it'll be quieter from both not having to hear the unit run, as well as street noise.
Is there anything else I should be on the lookout for with these systems?
