I am removing the ship lap. They had tile backsplash on the wall before. What is the best route to go to repair where they had tile? For the tim being I just want to paint the wall. when money permits, I will be upgrading the counter top then adding backsplash. At least, 2 years plus down the road.

If you attempt to remove all the glue residue, you will probably be removing the paper off the drywall as well. You can scrape it all off and skim coat the areas. It may take a couple of passes to get a smooth surface, but you can prime and paint it to get ready for the next tile job.
