I would like to enclose our over-closet storage with doors (images attached, disregard the level resting on the bottom). If we were staying in the house longer, I would take the time to purchase custom cut paneled doors that match the closet. At this point I would prefer to get the job done. Questions:

1. Wood -- 1/2" oak, beech, or another hardwood?
2. Hinges -- do they need to be mortised into the "jamb" or can I get away with affixing them directly?
3. Closure -- magnets are probably easiest rather than a ball catch?

Will this be an easier job than doing bypass sliders?

You could use euro hinges, or zero mortise hinges and not have to mortise them in. There are a lot of ways to install the doors without having to mortise the hinges in.

If you are going to paint the doors I would go with poplar as it is a cheaper wood and paints well.

I wouldn't even give sliders a thought but that is just me.

Yea, I meant poplar and not beech. Completely forgot about euro hinges, sounds like a good idea. I have several of these storage spaces to cover, will try one and see how it goes...

Here is a picture of over doorway storage, same as over closet. I made a frame of 1"x2" pine halflapped together and covered by 1/4" plywood on both sides. Total thickness 1 and 3/8", same as an interior door. I mortised the hinges, easy to do in soft wood.
