Hi folks, new here
In traditional stick-built roof construction, consisting of rafters, ceiling ties, collars and hangers, how is the span of the rafters and ceiling ties defined? Is the span of the rafter the complete distance from top plate to ridge, or is it the distance from top plate to collar/hanger connection point? For the ceiling ties, is the span the total distance between the front and back walls, or is it the longest of the distances between top plate and hanger, or between the two hangers? I ask for the purposes of working out what size (cross-section) timber I need.
Thanks
