Converting cabinet doors w/ EXTERNAL hinges to doors w/ INTERNAL hinges?

I have kitchen cabinets built in 1971 that use external hinges. Would like to convert them to doors that use internal, hidden hinges. The cabinet door style I currently have is the type where the door body physically fits "inside" the cabinet frame by ~ 3/8" of an inch. I have been told by one person that due to the style of door I have that I cannot use internal/hidden hinges because internal/hidden hinges require cabinet doors that use a perimeter framework that is entirely smooth, ie, no ledge or lip.

My question is, is this correct info?

I'll try and post pictures. Thx!

Ok, so I have a different version of this problem. My cabinet doors were mounted with face frame hinges OVER what had been an open shelf, with a scalloped frame all the way around, so there are no straight edges on which to mount these retrofit hinges. images are:
1. open cabinet door shows scallop-edged frame of underlying cabinet
2. closed door exposed hinge
3. open door view of hinge

is there anything i can do to install proper dampers or new hinges here? or do i need to put some felt pads on the doors and call that good enough?
