I removed an old shower wall to make the shower larger. There is an area in the ceiling that I had to patch. This 1959 house has 1/2” thick drywall strips covered by 1/2” plaster, and the ceiling joints had metal lath embedded, which I removed. So there is this bumpy gap where the path was, and I’ve patched where the header was with 2 layers (1/4” + 1/2” drywall strips). See photos.

Should I tape these joints then mud? Or fill the bumpy area where lath was, then tape the joint and mud like normal, finishing with a wide feathered edge? Or should I cut a larger section out so I have smooth edges against smooth edges? Or just cover the whole ceiling with 1/4” drywall?
