I hoping someone can explain what I can expect in terms of drainage on a paver patio...
I had a fairly large patio put in this Fall. Cambridge stones, 4 inches or so of RCA, then sand, screeded, then the stones laid and joints filled with Gator poly sand.
At first, everything drained well. I had two small bird bath puddles that disappeared in 30 mins to an hour after rain stopped, that mason said he would repair, his only request is that we wait until Spring to do it, to see if anything else settles. It was mid Nov at the time, so fair enough I thought.
Over the Winter Im seeing more and more puddles during and after rain events and the puddles are getting bigger with every storm. Right now its raining and a solid 30% of the whole patio surface has a 1/4" or so of standing water on it.
I put a level around different areas of the patio and it does seem to be pitched away from the house. I cannot determine if its enough pitch..my gut tells me no, but at a minimum there is some pitch on the patio to drain water away and on to the grass.
Whats baffling me more than anything is why am I getting more and more puddles as time goes on? Does poly sand "drain" at all? Of course stones with regular sand allow the water to drain through but what about poly sand? Assuming there is some drainage action, could this also have anything to do with the ground being frozen under the patio and the water having nowhere to go? We have had a TON of rain where I am (Long Island) and the ground is frozen and over saturated and Im thinking that might be contributing to it, too.
