I bought this house a few years ago knowing there would be alot of remodeling. Whoever built the house should be in prison. Each month is a new issue. I'm sure you all know how that goes....
I'm told by neighbors this garage was adding on after the home was built in 1992. It was built without any concrete knee walls. Is it just me or shouldn't garage always have knee walls for protection/water infiltration/ etc?
During my remodel, I built two knee walls on both sides of the garage door. They came out great. However, compared to the south wall, they were easy because the walls I built were only about 3 ft long. Plus the garage header made it easy to build temporary supports! The next side of the house is 30 feet long. This side is the gable end to my trusses.
Couple questions:
1.) Is it common to build an attached garage to a house without using a knee wall? Here, they used 3 2x6s stacked on each other as shown in pic
2.) Is it better to brace the entire wall, tear out the studs and build a new knee wall in one pour or do it in sections?
3.) Any suggestions on bracing?
