Hello,
I got some recent work done by a contractor and we have some disagreement around my finish expectations. See attached photos. He’s trying to tell me this is just “the way it is done’, but I can’t imagine that is the case. I’ve searched photos online and I don’t see any examples where the last few inches of the finish is this bad & uneven. From what I find the brushed finish goes pretty much right up to the edge, in a consistent look, or they but a transition edge that is uniform the whole length of it. As you can see from the pics here that edge is all over the place. Can someone advise me on whether I’m right here? Is this my high expectations or is it shoddy workmanship?
Regards
Jim

If they left the brush marks shy of the edge, they should have tooled the edge with an edge trowel to make a smooth, uniform swath around the concrete. Not bringing the brush marks to the edge shows laziness or ineptness on the part of the finisher.
That was my thinking too. I really don’t understand why brush finish can’t be brought to edge, but if you can’t do that at least have an uniform stop and transition.

This is the part i would object to …
While I have issue with that too, I also have issue with the transition throughout. Would you not have issue with this part?

It looks like they either randomly used a different brush or something. I'm guessing they got a finer bristle brush along the edge in an attempt to even it - as they couldn't do it with the full size brush (maybe bad brush type or style) and when it was wet and dark you couldn't see that obvious change, hence why its all over the place.
