I have a bit of an odd situation.
I am planning to build a new fence, basically in line with the existing fence most of the way, and extending it in one direction.
I don't want to mess with existing posts that are half rotted with big hunks of concrete around it that are difficult to remove, I dug post holes in the middle of existing posts that are 4' apart. I have dug 18 post holes about 30" deep, with a post hole digger about 7-8" in diameter. Ready to set new posts.
But my permit processing has stalled. City is giving me a hard time (long story), and it looks like I may have to litigate so I can put up a fence the same as the one I have now without lowering it's height to 3'. Anyway it looks like it will be some time after the smoke clears before I can do this project.
So I have now 18 holes done. It was hard work because of tree roots that I have to cut away. But I don't want rain to come and wash the holes away, or cause the sides to collapse on itself. Now this weekend I had a few newly hatched ducklings fell into the holes there are lots of ducks in the neighborhood due to proximity to the river.
I have over 100 coconuts in my backyard from the palms that I can use. They are perfect size to cap these holes. It works. I push one in and it sits tight at the top of the holes. But if we get heavy rain and water rises the coconuts will float. Any idea how I can get the coconuts to stay put? Drill a hole all the way through and put in a short piece of rebar?
Ideas?
