Hey guys I have a problem. I have a painted concrete floor partially covered in asbestos tile. I don't want to remove the tile for obvious reasons and trying to remove the paint from the concrete seems onerous plus I think it's there to keep out moisture it doesn't look like typical paint it's red and very smooth almost like a wash for lack of a better term

Anyway I was thinking of covering the entire floor with thinset and durock cement backer board then placing carpet or tile over that. Should I do this or am I setting myself up to fail? The exposed painted concrete portion is only 1/4 of the floor the rest is asbestos tile which is why I want to cover the entire floor

I already know to wear coveralls, a mask approved for asbestos, glasses and knee pads and to clean the floor before hand so the thinset will stick. I'm not calling a professional I plan to do this myself. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

If the asbestos tile has a layer of paint on top of it, then it is contained. Asbestos is only a health hazard when it is made friable, or dusty. If left alone and covered it poses minimal risks. I would not go to the extent of thinset and cbu on top of it. Covering it with carpet seems to be a semi good move. Until moisture enters the picture. You could always apply ceramic tile directly over it all using thinset and use area rugs where needed. The tile would be impervious and would definitely cover the asbestos.
