So I live in a ranch home (with full basement) built in the 50's. We love the house, the area, the yard, etc, but we don't like the small amount of bedroom space compared to the total SF of the house. In a perfect world, I could cut/paste excess SF from one part of my house to the bedroom area, but modern technology does not allow me to do this yet
We have 3 kids and 3 bedrooms. The 2 kids bedrooms are very small (even with bunk beds in one of them). Our master bedroom is also very small with very little closet space and a small bathroom with sink, shower, toilet.
Our original idea was to build a master suite in the attic, ruled it out to cost/headaches and the fact that it might be overkill. We ruled out using one of the bedrooms in the basement because we'd prefer to be above grade. And finally, we ruled out moving because (in our area) it's either small original ranches or tear-downs and tear-downs are out of our budget.
I'm now wondering if it's feasible to do a small addition off the master bedroom/bathroom to give us enough room to add a double-sink/tub and then allow for more room/closet space in the bedroom. I was originally thinking bump-out, but it sounds like bump outs hang off the house so not sure if that is possible if it's a large one.
To solve the problem of the 4th bedroom, we were thinking of walling off the living room from the dining room and making that into a very small 4th bedroom. This would close up the house a little bit and make it so you couldn't walk front door>living room>dining room>bedroom, but instead have to go through the kitchen to get to the bedroom area.
I've attached a picture of the back of my house...the left is a sunroom addition that the prior homeowner did. All the way to the right is where our bedroom is.
The 2nd picture is the floorplan layout.
Any suggestions? Is this possible or would it look kinda silly?
