Starter strips are cheaper.

Quality wise, on eaves I prefer 3tabs for starter for the increased headlap they afford. Starter strips are nice up rakes.

You don't to waist a nice 30 year for a starter. Just get some stater shingles or some cheap 3 tabs.

 

Exactly what I'm thinking. Even more so since I'm paying more for the upgraded shingle that are being used as a starter.

While I'm thinking about it, why isn't a rolled starter strip product used? From what I have read about installing the starter, it has to be properly spaced so the starter seams don't line up with the shingle seams. Wouldn't rolling out a continuous starter eliminate the seam issue? Roll out, nail, and it's done. Would work for the rake end also.

 

I cannot stand guys who use 3-tabs as starters these days. They're rarely ever installed properly.

Premade starter is better, cheaper and quicker.

We very rarely tear off roofs where the my cut the tabs of the shingle. Actually, I can only remember one.

Again, my point is, there is a proper tool for every job. Why turn a shingle around if it was designed to be installed the other/correct/tab down way?

If there are less expensive manufacturer designed starter strips, why not use them. I really don't want previous job, mixed color, been laying around next to the shed shingles used on my house.
