Tying new roof into old.

I just got permits to add raise our existing sunroom to the second floor. It's only 7'6 off the house x 11' wide.
I had plans to cut the existing rafters and add new valley rafters.
After talking to the building inspector, he suggested that I leave the existing structure alone and nail a valley board over the top of roof and support the ridgeboad from inside. Much like what is illustrated here:

I spent a lot of time working through the structural details in my plan but this method would be a lot faster and thus less likely to allow weather in. Is this standard practice when tying in a new roof?
