It would be helpful to have an additional outlet in a utility room that has a gas water heater. The easiest location is straight through a wall from an existing outlet, but that is within a foot of an existing gas water heater burner. Is there a distance limit for an outlet near a gas burner? I can go up the wall so the new outlet would be several feet from the burner, but it would still be near the top of the water heater.

Even if codes are silent on the relative position of an outlet to a water heater, you still want to make some practical considerations. For example, you probably want to avoid placement where day-to-day use might cause you to bump the temperature control on the water heater.

Just research and look for a solution that allows you to use NM cable, or the cable type you plan to come through the wall with. You just have to realize not all raceways are designed for 120v wire.
