No such thing as primer and paint in one but in the sick minds of evil marketing people and unsuspecting consumers. And no, professional painters do not use it all the time so your store person knows not of what he speaks! Just guessing? The advice came from a minimum wage, apron wearing, box store employee?

You might be able to put a latex satin directly over nice prepped oil based finish. You will need to clean what you have thoroughly and then sand it to scruff the surface. Oil finishes can chalk over time though so to be safe...

Alkyd primers are great equalizers and if there is any doubt I would use one or a high bonding waterbased primer and underlay. Either will give nice adhesion to your prepped surface and provide a nice even film for your finish coats.

Shop for paint and good advice in a real paint store.

 

I just bought a 7-year-old house and am repainting the inside.

Question on the trim:
The current trim is oil-based, satin finish. I would like to put a latex, satin finish, over it. I explained this to a guy at the store who told me that all I need is the latex paint with a built in primer. He said that contractors do it that way ALL the time. I've read about the sanding, cleaning, and priming, but what do you think about simply using the latex paint with the built in primer?

BALONY, get advise from a real paint store and not Blowes of Homely Depot. If this crap advise actually came from a real paint store, find another
