My wife and I are DIYing a new walkway from our front porch to the street. The path is a straigth shot. We've already dug out the area and laid down the crushed stone underlayment. We've left extra room because we're not sure of two things:
How to ensure that my lines from the starting points of the porch are straight, in other words, they don't angle off. And also how to properly use a line level.
What I've done so far: I purchased a laser level, set on the bottom step of our porch and held my hand down to catch the light of the beam, walked to the distance where the path ends, with my hand catching the beam, put a stake in, put a nail in the step and ran string from the step to the stake. The laser is very hard to see outdoors.
When I run the line level on the string, it reads level in the middle area but as it appraches the stake, near the end of the walkway, it reads unlevel.
This project has me really frustrated. I'm usually pretty handy. How should I use these tools properly?
