My last house had a pergola. To block the sun, my wife bought burlap fabric from a fabric store and sewed simple curtains. We'd hang them up in the Spring and take them down in the Fall.

Hey Splinter,
When you go to attach the shade cloth on the roof of the pergula, buy some furring strips (1x2 lumber) from any home improvement center or lumber yard. Every place the shade cloth passes over a wood member of the pergula, install a furring strip flat over the fabric. Use 2" minimum length nails or 1 1/2" minimum length wood screws to sandwich the fabric between the furring strip and the pergula structure.
