How do you change a zone valve? and when the thermostat is off the zone valve is on, when the thermostat is on the zone valve is off. How do i fix this?

First, what kind of zone valve? and what kind of thermostat? pictures would help alot...it sounds if the wiring is not correct...but depending on the zone valve and thermostat there are several solutions..

Is this a White Rodgers zone valve, and has a new thermostat been installed.
