What I have in mind is using shakes on my gable and having a trim board separate the shakes from my lap siding below. I know to use Z flashing where the shakes touch the trim board. Could you tell me what to do where the trim meets the lap siding? Do I just caulk this area or do I need to use another strip of Z flashing there?

I forgot to mention that I'm using LP siding not vinyl.

I dado out a groove on the back side of the transition trim so that the board will overlap the lap siding by an inch. I also caulk the top of the lap siding and then seat that board into the caulking. The caulking is there but you just cant see it.
