That picture's a little small, but aside from the ancient rag-wrapped SE cable, I think I see the concentric neutral extended by "splicing" it to a twisted bundle of aluminum wires, using a loop of copper wire as some obscene sort of twist-tie. Is that it? Because if so, holy :censored:!

The crappy splice worked because they only ran a few lights in the building. The building flooded this winter from a broken pipe. When the cleaning company came in and ran their huge dehumidifiers it started smoking. I don't know why the copper wire and aluminum didn't react and corrode.

It looks like SEU spliced to a piece of triplex wire.

If that is part of the SE cable that denfentaly need to be replace anyway.

You are lucky so far you did not get the conductor catch on fire yet.

Not my mess.

This is a panel I saw when I was there to estimate the drywall and finish work. The other thing you can't see is that there was a small bathroom sink 3 feet below the panel.

The owner asked me if I thought it should be moved. They are going to rehab the place to be a studio apartment. { I thought (SURE, just get your hack to move it to the left about 3 feet into the shower)}

I told them to call a licensed electrician because the whole place will have to pass inspection to get a CO.:wink:

Crazy stuff.
