I've had good experiences with them over the past seven years or so, and I like them because they're low cost and easy to interface w/ a computer (makes it really easy to write scripts for them), but I was wondering if other people have any experience with any *real negatives associated with their use. This is something of a continuation of another thread in another forum I can't access.

*getting the signal absorbed up by an old appliance or a CFL pulsing when off doesn't count ;)

I have positive experiences with X10 devices.

Currently use them to remotely/wirelessly turn/off the light in our swimming pool, a fountain across the yard, and lighting on the patio - all from one handheld remote control. Pretty slick for not a whole lot of money.

I used them with my mother as she got older and could not get around the house very well. Had a table lamp by her living room easy chair and a table lamp in her bedroom. With the X10 she could leave the living room light while she made her way to the bedroom, and vice versa. Also the light switches were easy to get to being right on the table top - rather than having to reach up into a table lamp. Seemingly easy things that are not so easy when you get older and encounter mobility issues.

Also used them with a pendant panic button system for my mother (think 'I've fallen and I can't get up'). In an emergency a push of the button would initiate a telephone dialer to a monitoring company and via X10 start a light in the front window flashing on/off - making it easy for emergency responders to identify the right house as they came up the street.

I have used them for approx 10 years with very little problem or incidents. The modules do wear out and need replacement after prolonged use. But I currently have a 2800 sq ft home and I am using 10 through the house for general lighting. Some for display cabinets, (antique) but the majority for area lighting. I am very pleased with the concept and don't know how I lived without it.

X10 was a great product when they first came out. A few years ago they changed something about the product and they kept having a ton of problems so the local electrical warehouses pulled them from the shelf. Well apparently a few months ago they got there act back together and there product is much better now. I haven't heard anything about it though....
