Sometimes I am at work and it REALLY worries me that I left the stove on at home!

I have a gas stove (Magic Chef with electric igniter): To turn on the flame, I turn a handle and it starts the flow of gas and starts a clicking sound to spark a flame. After about two or three clicks the flame is lit. However, the clicking will continue until the handle is turned slightly backward. The gas and flame are quiet.

But I have been leaving the sparker on (about 8 minutes) while cooking. That way I have an audio cue of clicking that the stove is on. When I leave home, I listen to see if there is any clicking.

Will that 8 minutes of clicking prematurely wear-out the stove's sparking igniter?

This isn't an answer regarding the sparking igniter, but re: forgetting, which we all do. Have you considered setting the alarm on your cell phone to go off after a certain time, maybe about the time you usually go out the door? Since we get accustomed to all continuous sounds, you might get accustomed to the clicking, if distracted.

I would try moving the pot from the burner you're using to another burner when done cooking.
I would then look at the vacated burner to see it's still on. I would then turn it off.

And then relax. :wink2:

8 extra minutes of igniter clicking will more than likely wear it out sooner.

Makes sense that a person who prefers auditory cues would benefit from sound whether the stove is on or off. If 8 minutes of clicking igniter will wear it down, then maybe turn on a clock radio while the stove is on. Shutoff the clock radio only after the stove has been turned off.

My list is a lot longer than just "did I turn the stove off" and I've been dealing with it most of my life. Before leaving the house I count the puppies to be sure they are in, check the stove, check to be sure the water isn't running at the sink, verify everything that belongs in the frig isn't on the counter and so on. The point is, I have made it a routine which I can remember. Losing my hearing has added things like the water running to my list, but I have never gone out and left the stove on. I have found a burner on several hours after cooking, but had I gone out I would have caught it.

As for stoves and burners, I'm keeping my eyes open for one of the mfgs to make a smart stove where I can time every function and of course turn everything off from anywhere at any time.

Practice, I've been doing it for 50 years.

Sometimes people put something in the oven to bake, set a kitchen timer, but then they get an urgent phone call to go pick someone up. Timer goes off with no one home to hear it or smell the food aroma. While out, that person forgets all about what's in the oven. Meanwhile the oven starts smoking....

Ovens with built in shutoff-timers are a safeguard to a scenario like this.

That's why a cell phone works. . .if you use one. :} Btw, what cooks in 8 min?

My Mom, who is now in her 80's had this problem as well. She got her self into the habit of checking the stove whenever she would leave the house. It took a couple of weeks of concerted effort to get into the habit. Now it is second nature to her to walk over to the stove and check all 4 burner knobs to make sure they are off. It got to be such a strong habit for her that even if she goes out onto the patio now she automatically does it.

To my knowledge the microwave isn't well known for starting house fires or 3rd degree burns. It's forgetful people's friend and not just the elderly. Use it when possible, even if you forgot you are forgetful. :biggrin2: BTW, my quick oatmeal cooks in 3 sessions of 40 seconds while preparing my fruit.

My phone has a timer and is with me except when showering. A very handy reminder and I use it diligently.

If old-fashioned oatmeal is preferred, a microwave will cook that, too.
