What kind of work you can do without home improvement license?
Can you dig ground by using shovel? Can you move any stone from place to place by hand?

IF its your own home, you can do anything you want ( 'king of the castle' ),,, make sure whatever you do is covered by the proper code ( elec & plumbing spring to mind ) so it will pass inspection &, more importantly, IF there's an issue, your insurance company may have an out so they won't have to pay the claim.

...I agree it depends on where you live, but from my understanding as stated above you can do anything except make structural changes. Of course this may vary with where you are.
