Working with PEX pipe

2956 Views 7 Replies 7 Participants Last post by  paintdrying
I bought a 100' roll/coil of 1/2" pex pipe at my local home improvement store for a basement bath. When I released the strapping holding the roll/coil together it stays coiled up and seems like it might be hard to work with that way. My question, Is there a secret to getting this pipe to "unwind" straighten out?

#1 Your going to need 3/4, not 1/2" for the main supplys all the way to the fixtures then step it down to 1/2.
100' of 1/2 could do a whole house or 2.
Make sure the pipe has time to warm up then bend it backwards as you take it off the roll.

So the rest of us can learn, what if the OP uses a manifold system. Can they use 1/2" supply? If so, so it matter the distance the fixture is from the manifold?

It’s a pita to have to straighten that much pex. You can get straight lengths from 10’-20’

This is coming off a 3/4 manifolds (hot & cold) to individual fixtures approximately 25' from manifold, 5 lines total 1/2" pex to shower, sink, & toilet.
PEX is easy to straighten, you simply warm the pipe up and uncoil it gently in reverse. Or you can run warm water through it to make it less stiff very quickly. I work with 300 foot lengths, simply uncoil what you need, straighten gently, then cut with a tubing cutter.

As to sizing, if you have a manifold system, you can probably use 1/2 inch for all the runs.

Ayuh,... That 1/2" stuff can be pushed, 'n pulled as ya please, 'n stays put just Fine, After ya secure it...

Just pay mind to the pitch of the pipe, so's ya ain't fightin' the twist...

The Effort to get the stuff, In-place, goes up with the diameter,...
I bought two rolls of that pex pipe. Now i just buy the straight pieces. And that gas line roll that is huge, oh man, that stuff is something else.
