After reading lots of good comments about James Hardie here, we were pretty set on using it. Problem: It has not been warranted here since 2011. A suggestion was made to get Woodtone (woodtone.com) fiber cement siding instead, as it IS warranted here. I see no discussions of it per se here. Anyone familiar with it? Apparently Certainteed is not the stuff to get, so it's looking like either the Woodtone stuff or steel. Vinyl is not what we are after. thanks.

thanks for the replies. i heard that hardie is not warranted from a guy who sells the (now i find out) certainteed stuff. i thought the name he gave me was the manufacturer, but it was the supplier. that explains why the brand "woodtone" did not pop up. i apparently did not read enough on the site to realize that the product is certainteed. back to the no-warranty on hardie: i called hardie. no warranty in fairbanks since 2011. bummer. the good news is, we looked at steel, cement, and vinyl today, and the vinyl looks pretty good, surprisingly. so now we juggle the numbers, ease of installation, blah, blah.

It's not cheap, you'll also have to to use 1" J moulding and outside and inside corners if you go with the insulated siding.
