I am finally getting around to tiling my counter after much research. I am going to be buying some 1x3 pieces and using my router to put an edge on it and then nail it to my 1.5" of plywood to create my wood edge trim. Do you recommend putting this on before or after the tile? I'm thinking after the tile is in and grouted? Thanks

if you plan on having the grout touching the trim, do the trim before the grout.
the tile can go on first, but wait to grout.

I am going to be caulking between the tile and trim with caulk matched to the grout. I'm thinking I will tile first and then put the trim on so I can get it the same height as the tile. Then I will grout and then caulk between the tiles and trim.

why use caulk at all? i'd stick with your plan the rest of the way though.
i should think grout and caulk will stain differently if anything spills on them, and will need to be cleaned differently.

From what I've read when tiling a counter it's recommended to use caulk between the tile and wood trim because if the wood expands/contracts at all it will crack the grout. Also if you bump the wood hard enough to move it at all it will crack the grout. Also from what i've read it's a change of plain so you want to caulk there. Not sure if it's right or not, just what my research has come up with and it makes sense.

ok, seems sound to me then. i just wonder how close you can come to matching colors.... but hey, i tiled a floor years ago out in my shop area, and just used black silicone caulk instead of grout, and it still looks fine today, soooooo.... but doing it your way does make more sense in that situation.

They actually make caulk that matches the grout. It comes in sanded and unsanded to match the grout. Tile stores can get you caulk to match most grouts. Thanks for your help
