So, we live in a house built in 1961. We love it. We even love the wood paneling that's common throughout. However, there are two spots in the entryway which are 1) Ugly, and 2) Wearing poorly. I've posted pictures of each of them (my wife hates the tile, and the wood railing is wearing badly).

My thought is to do some granite. My brother in law does counter-tops and could get us a good price on just about anything we want.

Questions:

Would it look unbelievably gauche to put granite on the top of that banister hall divider thing, in place of the 1x8 piece of cherry wood that's there now?

I need some ideas on what colors for granite would match the red of the wood in the entryway.

Any help would be awesome. Thanks!

Not sure I understand

Are you asking about my age because assuming that a post on a forum will draw comments is juvenile? Because I used the word suck, and that offends your delicate sensibilities? Why exactly? I posted a very simple request, weeks ago; not a single response. That, for a forum, is the definition of "sucks." Don't be offended, just try to stop sucking.

according to the dates, it's only been 6 days. i've waited weeks for a reply on the legal forums!
however, i'd go with a black or very dark granite to cover the cherry. or just refinish the cherry.....
and i agree with the wife... man, that tile sucks! (oops, did i say sucks?)
