The wood burning inserts are designed to go inside of a proper firebox that is capable of withstanding the BTUs they will put off. Removing a direct venting fireplace assembly (if that is what you are talking about) does not usually leave something that meets that criteria, intact.
Wood Fireplace Insert Question - Can you put one into a prefab fireplace?
If there is enough space for the wood fireplace insert, can you have a fireplace insert installed into a prefab fireplace?
