Wood burning fireplace remodel

I am remodeling an existing wood burning fireplace. Is it best to replace the damaged drywall with cement board, or stick with drywall? Should I install the new mantel and surround before tiling, or tile first? Do I tile from the top down or vice versa? Thanks for any advice!
