I'm installing a new outlet in my garage for my welder. It has a NEMA 6-50 plug which only requires 2-120v wires and 1-ground. My question is, can I buy 8/2 wire and use the 2 coated wires for the 120v lines and the bare wire for the ground? Thanks in advance.

Yes, you can.

But.....what if later you wanted to use something that needed a neutral? If it was me, I'd run 8/3 and wire nut the neutral. The cost difference is minimal....but if you wanted to do it later....it would cost a lot more.

Not a lot of big amperage stationary tools require 2p3w, so to answer the OP, you'll be fine

The only thing you need to do is mark the white wire with tape or a marker so it is not white anymore, at both ends.

Right because it's technically supposed to be red and black, correct?

It is not restricted the black or red. Any colour other than white, grey or green will indicate it is hot wire.
