Hi All,

I am in the process of closing up an old entry through a wall. Since it's in a brick/block former exterior wall we were planning on using the space for a bookshelf on one side and wall to wall cabinets on the other. As such it is framed with 2x3's on the flat to make the back of the bookshelf.

What I'd like to do at minimum is two receptacles placed roughly as seen is the pic, and MAYBE some lighting for both sides of the assembly.

I have made a hole to pass wiring through the floor from the cellar. As it requires fishing through a ceiling joist that is tight to the sill I'm hoping to not have to do any more holes and branching within the wall. I am looking for the best way to run the wiring either through or around these studs and ensuring they stay protected to code.

Could I build out a channel with plywood and nail plate? Or, is it permissible to just bore through the studs on the narrow side? I have access to MC cable if that makes it easier/safer. Was planning to use metal boxes anyway to reduce any risk of them being shot into through the back.

Thank you for any advice!

Just not a great plan.
Not getting how you plan to gain anything by using under sized lumber laying flat like that.
No way is that little recess going to work for a real book shelve.
Laying flat like that the drywall's going to crack.

The photo is deceptive because one of the studs is covering the edge of the opening. It's actually about 15" deep. I also don't need to worry about drywall (I was going to soundboard) because the other side will be a built in cabinet

None of that makes it a great plan, but hopefully makes more sense.
