Hi,

I've got a 500W incandescent light bulb that is used for a pool light. The installation is as follows:

There is a GFCI wired to the main circuit breaker. There is a load wire that runs out to a junction box near the pool. The light is tied into the junction box.

Problem:
The light quit working a few month's back. Pulled the bulb and it was burned out. The pool liner was in need of replacement so I let the pool company take care of getting the new bulb put in. They un-wired the light from the box to put the new liner in, then re-wired everything. The light does not work now.

Question:
If both receptacles on the GFCI work, does that mean that power is getting out to the light and the light was just wired wrong or some other issue with the light? I have not worked much with electricity so I do not plan on trying to check things myself at this point. I just want to have some knowledge of these type of circuits before the pool place tries to tell me that everything is fine on their end.

Generally, if there's power at the GFCI receptacle then anything connected downstream from there should also have power. Only a significant malfunction of the GFCI could create a different result. Do the test and reset functions work normally?

Yes, both function properly.

If you have a multimeter or test light, you can check the "load" terminals on the back of the GFCI for power, or check in the J-box where the pool light is connected. So far, it sounds like the problem is definitely downstream of the GFCI.

Checked the j-box this morning. Reading 123 V.

How do you know they actually replaced the bulb? Alternatively, how do you know the new bulb is good? This really sounds like a burned out bulb. If you have power to the submersible cable that runs from the J-box into the underwater fixture, then there's really only one remaining point of failure: the bulb.

Pool Light Repair

I haven’t posted anything on-line before, but after recently replacing and repairing my pool lights, I felt compelled to share my experience and eventual success. The post is fairly lengthy and includes a lot of details that would have helped me. Hopefully it will help other do-it-yourselfers get a better understanding of how pool lights work and how they are put together, and it will help to avoid some of the misunderstandings and mistakes that I made. If you have doubts about anything in my narrative or about your own abilities, I would highly recommend having a qualified professional replace and install your faulty equipment.
