Guys,

What is the best way to wire a step light like this. There is not enough room to run the romex into the existing box and you can't have wire nuts just hanging outside the box.

Any ideas to stay to code?

There seems to be enough room but if you feel you can't do it you can go back to back with a handy box for indoors or a single gang rain tight box for outdoors. Use a chase nipple to connect either box through the knockout in back. Make your connections in the new box. Make sure to maintain a solid mechanical ground between boxes.
