my home wiring has 14/2 copper, black, white and red. but my hunter fan does not have a place for the red wire to go and i cant get the fan to work is the red wire my problem

How is the switch wired?
How many wires in the ceiling box?
Where is the ground wire?
Where are you located?

If you do not have a light kit, check the switch to see if the black or red is connected to the dimmer switch if there is one. If you have a light kit, there should be two hots, two neutrals.
