I'm a homeowner not a builder. We have 4 x 30' long deck adjacent to our dining room and kitchen. The deck needs extensive repair to bring it up to code: new ledger, joist hangers, beefed up beam, roof etc. I was hoping to push our dining area out into the new 4' enclosed deck area as our dining space is tiny. The architectural designer says yes, but access to the new space will be limited to the width of the existing 8' window between the dining area and the deck because that's where the header is. That's not enough clearance to get past the dining table into the new deck/sunroom area and will leave just an awkward access to the new 4'wide area. Our house is 1940's with coved ceilings and textured plaster walls, so it's a bit more complicated. I would be content with a head clearance limited to the 80" height of the header, but is it that difficult or complicated to widen a header in a wall?

Same situation in the kitchen. I want to swap the current door and window locations to streamline use of the new kitchen design. Designer says door can go where window is but new wider window cant go where the door is currently situated.

Your thoughts are appreciated. Sorry tried to attach photos but this site won't permit it.

its doable you will need an engineer to look at it. if you can see what it will cost to flush it up in the ceiling.(prob a bit more) Then you can make a decision from there. With no complications your looking at a full days worth of work for a couple of experienced guys just to replace the header at the current height.
