Hi;
My Kenmore (only 2 yrs old) window AC unit (6,000 BTU) cycles the compressor on and off so frequently, I'm afraid the unit will not last long.
Apparently though, the unit is functioning normally. It cools the room, but it is very annoying to me, as a light sleeper I seem to wake up briefly almost every time the compressor turns on or off.

This is an electronic thermostat, with the sensor in front of the evaporator, held away about 1/2" by a plastic clip.
I am trying various methods to put a little hysteresis in the system, such as slipping a piece of plastic tubing over the sensor, thinking this may slow its response to temp changes.

What I may do eventually is rig up a wall thermostat (through a relay) to the compressor.

Any ideas?

Thanks

You would have to rig up a wall thermostat to the main power supply to the unit. If you are renting the room make sure the landlord won't object. Seriously, if the sound of it wakes you up you may want to try earplugs, or a white noise generator/radio. I used to work 12 hour alternating shifts (sleeping in the day) and got used to earplugs. The soft pink disposable construction type work well. Impossible to get the neighbors/lawnmowers to be considerate of me.

I don't like earplugs. They tend to allow moisture buildup in my ears, which starts itching. Also, I would be afraid that I won't hear the smoke detector if it were to go off.

White noise may be the answer. I have a good stereo system in the room. All I need to do is make a CD, and put it on replay mode so it will just play all night.

Thanks for the idea
