I am just wondering if thinset is an effective adhesive for backerboard to plywood? This is in a non-wet area and I will use a topical membrane just in case, but I'm just wondering if the thinset will hold the backerboard in place...

Yes, thinset will bond to plywood--however, the thinset under a backer board is really just a filler that prevents hollow gaps that can flex when walked on---

the roofing nails are doing the actual 'holding'--

If you want a good bond (which is not needed) look for a modified thinset approved for setting tile over plywood---or mix liquid latex with an unmodified thinset--

Thinset sticks just fine to plywood, but that's not really the question in your post. First question is to back up and ask what you're doing exactly. If you're attaching backerboard to plywood, thinset does not behave as an adhesive.

I'm trying to imagine what you're doing that would involve plywood AND backerboard AND topical membrane AND a non-wet area.

You are over doing it. No need for that membrane.

Screw down that plywood, get allllll the squeaks out and put your hardibacker/cementboard/ditra down. (Whatever you choose)

Imo, either use hardi or ditra. Both easy to install. Hardi, trowel your thin set and blast it with about 16 roofing nails per board. Ditra is even easier but more expensive, no nails needed there.

Ditra is slightly more expensive, but then again I think screws are better for cement board anyway, so by the time you include the screws and the tape for the seams, Ditra starts to look like a better and better deal when you think of the ease of installation.

You're obviously just kidding about that. You need alot more than 16 fasteners. Heck you'll need 8 to get you 2" away from the 4 corners alone. Better figure at least 54 and probably more like 60 or so.

I also prefer Ditra, but yes the materials cost about 2x more $$, but easier, cleaner, better and healthier too.

Probably right Jeff.

The directions say a nail about every 8", I found myself going about 5"-6" max. I think I was having too much fun with the roofing nailer. Then I switched to Ditra........:biggrin2:

Mike is spot on. The thinset is mostly for filler, but will provide some adhesion. However the adhesion is broken in the first few years. The mechanical fasteners are doing the work. I prefer screws if I do backer, but I too have gone orange. By the time you add up the correct number of nails or screws, mesh tape, thin set for the seams, crack isolation roll on membrane...then factor in the installation time you are pretty close to the cost of Ditra. Not to mention the time you save on installation.
