Can you take a picture and post? Positive ID will help a lot.

I'm in California now, but I lived in Ohio for 20 years before, so I'm a lot more familiar with the weeds than I'd like to be.

They are insidiously invasive. We have a couple of large patches which have come up this year.

From everything I've read, there are a couple of specific herbicides which work on wild onions/chive/garlic, but Roundup is NOT one of them. The leaf tops will die back and go dormant in the hot summer weather, but will just come back again in the fall. Even digging them up is difficult due to how the root system spreads.

I tried some hot boiling water on a small patch, and it seems to have worked, but don;t know yet if they will come back this coming fall.

Digging them out carefully is the best solution for removal and eradication!

Are they edible?

I would dig them up. I have some that comes back every year, in the same spot so I don't know how invasive that is. they haven't moved in 14 years. It's great chopped up on baked potatoes.
Dig them up and add them to your garden....if you don't have a garden then start one.

There are many many members of the genus Allium, which is a part of the lily family that includes onions, chives, Chinese Chives, garlic and many more.

Some can be very invasive, though I've never experienced the kind of invasiveness of, say nut grass.
