It is not the compressor at fault. It is trying to keep up. It is time for a nailer rebuild. Of the 4 framers, 2 finish, 4 trim, 1 roofing, 3 flooring nailers, I have one table set up basically for rebuilding them. I keep kits hanging on peg boards. I can't afford leaks nor down time. A leak is a precursor to down time, believe me.

I don't know for sure because I don't recognize it, but imagine the cap that you can turn is the air deflector and it's made so that you can that you can adjust the discharge wherever you want it. Otherwise though it should not be hissing just laying there, so I would check the couplers as suggested including where they are threaded onto the hose. If not that you might check to see if you can get a rebuild kit for the gun.

You are right. As soon as I unplugged the nailer, it compressed very quickly.

How do I rebuild the nailer? What is that back circular knob that it's leaking from?

You'll have to find the kits, sold online, or from the manufacturer of the gun. The cap you refer to is the exhaust port. Most likely it is leaking from a broken piston gasket. Nail guns have an array of gaskets, not only for the piston, but for the trigger assembly as well.

Go the gun manufacturer's web site. You should be able to find both the rebuild kit and instructions or parts break down there. There are repair shops that will rebuild it for you but it's not the difficult and personally I have a hard time paying someone to do something I can do myself.

The gun appears to be from Harbor Freight (central pneumatic). I understand that parts/rebuild kits for these are often unavailable. If your lucky it may only be a o-ring which you source yourself, although you'll have to make careful measurement of its size.

I've had some HF guns, decent gun for the price but repair parts are next to non existent. You might get lucky matching up a bad seal/gasket to fix it.

When my last HF framing nailer died I bought a Bostich with a 7 yr warranty ..... but the warranty excludes all moving parts :vs_mad:

Harbor Freight makes some great tools. As long as you know the capabilities. Mainly, you can't, for the most part, get replacement parts. Ever try getting some bearings for one of their trailers?

Personally, I consider most of their tools a cheaper way to rent specialty tools that I don;t necessarily want to buy.

The hand tools are a different matter, they are actually quite good.

If you are going to replace your HF finish nailer, you have some options. If you don't use it that often, get another HF. If you want better quality, try a Pawn Shop, sometimes you can find a good deal on used or even brand new tools.

Or you can go to Big Box stores. Home Depot has some specials on Finish nailers at the moment.

The HDX Pneumatic Finishing Nailer Kit with Canvas Bag (3-Piece) for $90 down from $110. (just a step up from HF)

Estwing Pneumatic 2-1/2 in. 16-Gauge Straight Finish Nailer with Canvas Bag for $85. down from $100.

Husky Finish Kit with 16-Gauge Finish Nailer, 18-Gauge Brad Nailer and 18-Gauge Stapler (3-Piece) for $152 (I have this kit and it is a pretty good deal, but I do want to trade up, I want an angled finish nailer.)

Lowes doesn't have any specials, however:

You can get the Metabo HPT (was Hitachi Power Tools) 2.5-in 15-Gauge 34-Degree Finish Pneumatic Nailer for $109 which is rated highly and comes with a case.

I like it and may just have to get one.
