I notice that in many homes, the furnace and in some cases air conditioning handling units are wired with BX or Armored Cable. I have also seen whole-house fans wired this way. This is in homes with no other armored type wiring. Do today's codes mandate BX or Armored cables in these situations?

No code mandate for this. Perhaps someone ran the metallic cables to provide more protection for the wiring.

There are literally thousands and thousands of home wired this way, here in Ontario, Canada.
At one time it was a code requirement and may still be.
In my present home, Romex feeds the off and on switch and then BX is run into the furnace.
Its in my mind that BX cable insulation has a higher temperature rating. Or at least used to have.
Its been 15 years since I worked in this area, so I doubt that I have current knowledge in this regard. The last furnace that I wired was in 1989.
