Cover the gasket with dope?
Yes, inside and outside surfaces(plumber's trade secret).
Use a teflon based pipe dope- something like Mega-loc.
It's mainly for lubrication and sealing minor imperfections.

A guy at the store told me to NOT use putty on the drain (between drain and shower pan). He said it's better to use a bead of 100% silicone. Tighten the bottom nut and the silicone, like the putty, will squish out and form a better seal for shower purposes.

Thoughts?

That's the way I do shower drains.
IMO, putty can move under the weight of someone standing on the drain. Caulking won't

As you can see, my pipe was off a tad. Ended up getting the brass drain. Figured it would be better with the added pressure of the pipe not aligning perfect.

Next question. How far dow do I cut the pipe? I figured the pipe should be cut about the height of the inside gasket that goes around the pipe? Sound about right?
