I need to install a surface mounted 2 gang receptacle box. Do you recommend using a regular 4x4 box or a handy box? Also, what depth do you recommend? There will be four 12 gauge wires (ground will be from conduit) and two receptacles in each box.

First option:

Second Option (Handy Box):

I prefer 4x4 boxes, or 4-11/16 boxes if you're 2-ganging GFCI or timer or other bulky device.

Those "Handy-boxes" are a little too specialist for me. If I want that, then I just take the above boxes and fit a 2-gang mud ring on it. That's how I approach Decora for instance. Decora don't work in 4x4 domed covers because they won't physically fit without mutilating them.

I always preferred the 4SDW-SPL box for surface and 4SDW-FB-SPL box for stud mounted. Occasionally an 4 11/16 version when needed. All those are 2 1/8 deep with both 1/2 & 3/4 ko's. That way I could use whatever mud ring rise and device accommodation needed for the job. That kept the truck stock smaller and easier to maintain. I never used handi boxes... too limiting.
