Have a lot of baseboards to install and need a coping saw for inside miters. I read that the saws from big box stores are crap and to order a quality saw from a woodworking store. Anyone here have suggestions on a good coping saw? Thanks. Jack

I've never had a fancy coping saw--Mine usually come from the Home Depot--the last two are Husky brand--works just fine---

I have two on my truck and a couple more on my assistants truck--

A fancy one might be nice, but I doubt if it will do the job any better than the less expensive ones I usually use.

I cope a lot of trim---

found this video of someone using a grinder

I cope like he does on my ts. and when on site, use my portable ts. haven't used a coping saw in many years.

9 times out of 10 you can cope a short board that meets the long board in a corner. otherwise I just set up a table to hold the long end. I can cope most any profile in a minute or so.

With the saw there isn't much difference, they're just a frame holding a blade taught. Get a fine blade, 21 teeth per inch or so, face the teeth TOWARDS the handle and cut on the pull stroke. While the angle grinder thing looks cool, I'd likely end up grinding off chunks of my hand!!!

Do you have to cope baseboards??? I have seen people cope crown, which is why I don't attempt to do crown, but never coped base
Yes, coping base is common. Anytime you don't want to measure the angle and deal with a corner that is rarely 90 deg, coping is the preferred method.

I'm not sure how much time the angle grinder saves. I can cope and file a good size crown in about the same time the dude in the video does with the angle grinder. It's not that difficult.

How close to you come to the edge of the profile? Isn't it hard to keep the profile and relieve the back with a grinder?

Not as difficult as one may think. With little practice you will get the hang of it quickly. The mat'l comes off so rapidly that it is easy to finesse the sanding disc along the cut line.

Glasses and leather gloves if you try it
