We currently have a deck behind our house and we have been contemplating building a sun room. I have experience renovating a kitchen, two bathrooms, and finishing a basement. The town had some useful documents on line that explained the requirements to meet code in a basement, such as PT floor plate, vapor barrier requirements, and etc. I also found code regulations on decks. I know some people have had these prefabricated aluminum single pained glass, though I am not a fan of the look. I have seen them put on existing decks, I also seen where people dig down and put a crawl space under the new addition.

I am trying to figure out the best way to start out for planning. I was thinking standard framing 1 story w/ vinyl siding, more windows as it is a sun room. I am thinking of doing a cathedral ceiling and if I am going to add a heat source, I might add a stove, which will add a bit of weight. Depending on costs I am considering a 3 or 4 season room. I was thinking about adding around 200ft^2. The room is on the north side of the house so it doesn't get a whole lot of light. It would be attached where we currently have a sliding glass door and their as a air duct in front of the door.

I guess what I am trying to figure out is what type of footings I need, would I require a complete demo of the rest of the deck, if it isn't up to current codes? Am I being over ambitious for the weekend warrior?

Need to start by posting some pictures.
Not sure how it works there but around here an occupied addition would require a real foundation.
Most often decks where not built to support the walls and a roof load.
Also most often the joist will also be undersized.
