The fan on top of my outside unit is dying, it will run for 30-45 minutes but then will seize up and I have to turn the system off. The system blows cold, even when the fan is seized up; obviously, I have no desire to run it that way though. So I only power it up when I go to bed and then I shut it off when I audibly hear the fan seize, that gets my room temp down to 85 or so.

I am comfortable replacing this fan myself, but I haven't the slightest idea where I should go to get a new one. The outside unit is a Heil Max Performance 14 and it was installed in 2004.

get an idea of pricing here or order it..does the motor free wheel at all in either direction and brake hard any grinding noises...WD40 down the shaft for now till you can change it.... http://www.bestbuyheatingandairconditioning.com/ you need the actual numbers off the motor itself forget the unit info just the model and serial with brand incase you need to cross reference....Grainger has a tech help line to match it up NOTE get a new CAP with the new motor

Yea definitely a lot of grinding noises when it's running. When the grinding noises stop, I know it has seized up again and I turn off the system.

bearing are shot if you get the slightest free wheel grinding

Thats probably going to be an OEM motor only. So you'll need to go to the local ICP/Tempstar/Heil distributor or dealer to get it.

that being said it's hella expensive!

Grainger.com has a number of units with similar specs. I imagine the most critical component is not to go over the current rated amp draw?

that one looks almost identical, only the shaft is longer than on the current motor.

On a side note, the shaft has at least half an inch of play in it, I'm sure that it's not supposed to have quite that much!

You always can cut the extra shaft. But 2" extra that's ok.

The Grainger motor is a single speed motor, 1075 RPM, too high to be used.

The other motor is a 840 RPM, but doesn't list if its a single or 2 speed.

The OEM motor is probably cheaper then the bestbuy motor.

Thank you to JJboy, he met me at Johnstone Supply today and helped me get a replacement motor. You have to be a registered HVAC technician to purchase there and he helped me out. Got another Emerson motor and the capacitor to go along with that particular motor. Slightly different than the old one but it's working great.

I got it to work on the first try*
(*blowing the wrong direction haha)
The fan is reversible, so I took the top of the unit back off and put yellow to orange and orange to yellow and now it spins the correct direction.

The unit is much quieter now, I guess that old motor was having issues long before it started seizing, I guess it just worked well enough to make one assume nothing was wrong. It has a scroll compressor which I guess is supposed to be quieter in the first place. I cannot hear the outside unit running now while I am inside the house and I am extremely happy about that
